Obituary

On Friday, February 7, 2020, Ross passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa with family and Pastor of Care at his side. He was in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of Faith (Gilmar) for 60 years; cherished father of Kimberly (Kent), Andrew (d. 1991)(Anita), Pamela, Lisa (Marty) and Jennifer; Poppa to grandchildren Brandon(d.2017), Shannon, Ben, Erin, Connor, Gabriel, Lindi, Zoe, Josie and Elsa, and Great-Poppa to Sawyer. Dear brother to Vernon, Harold, Elwood, Ada, Mary, Lois (all predeceased) and survived by sister June and brother Paul along with many nieces, nephews and their families.

Ross was born in Walsingham, Ontario on July 14, 1938 to Hazel Wilhemina (Piett) and Stephen Alexander Chapman. He attended Niagara Christian College and Upland Brethren in Christ College, California before graduating from George Brown College as a licensed journeyman electrician. He was a respected mentor in his field and proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

An avid outdoorsman, Ross enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. He especially enjoyed birdwatching in later years with his brother Elwood on camping trips in the spring and fall. He was outgoing and always enjoyed a challenge whether it be building a cottage (The Barn) up north in Haliburton or fixing up the Rocky Cove cottage in Honey Harbour with family friends, the Wilsons. He was known to be an inventive problem-solver and would always find creative solutions at work and home. Ross was a talented woodworker and expanded his art to becoming a gifted, watercolour folk-painter. Through his art he expressed the natural world he loved including countless bird pictorials, pastoral scenes of days-gone-by and Canadian landscapes inspired by the painting style of the Group of Seven.

Ross will be remembered for his strong personal integrity, family values and determined fighting spirit. His children will remember him as a loving father, mentor and teacher and as a deeply spiritual person whose strength of faith matched his resolve to do and be good. He has passed these values and strengths on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be greatly missed.

Ross’s Celebration of Life will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ross’s memory can be made to Ducks Unlimited Canada (www.ducks.ca) and Birds Canada (www.birdscanada.org). Personal condolences and memories may be shared at http://www.morrisfuneralchapel.ca

Dearest Family...I am sending my deepest condolences as you adjust to the loss of such a great man in your lives. I remember Ross (another Dad for me) as such a kind and warm-hearted soul. He would speak with a twinkle in his eye, and I remember being touched as a teenager with how he could show interest in you, and ask questions that showed he not only that he remembered things about you, but cared to know more. He was a solid rock, a foundation, like that rock up at Rocky Cove...and it was a great opportunity to share outdoor adventures with him and your family. Though life brought many hardships, I could always see that gentle nature-loving spirit in there, and he will always be remembered in my heart. I am grateful to have known him.
